How much do we need - How long is that piece of string?
These days most of us lead busy lives with little time to spare. It's easy to use our immediate surroundings as a dumping ground. We have more'stuff 'than we can ever assimilate! Inthe UK 50% of us confess to having more than we actually need in terms of material. We hold onto material items way more than our European neighbours too. And that is not just duvets, winter coats and warm clothes! Source - House Beautiful
How many items do you think we have, on average, in our homes? 300,000 is about average! After I learnt this fact, I felt better as I thought that I comfortably inside this figure. If you have folders full of paper - thats probably 200 right there!
We all know the old saying 'out of sight - out of mind' Just shove things in the cupboard and the mess goes away - problem solved! A quick solution especially if you're busy busy busy. But how long can one do this without getting completely snowed under and stressed out. You may not realise it but this multitudinous collection of things is cluttering your focus.
One of my clients used to have a very clear house - but stuffed in the cupboards was everything that they were not using at the time. Once the cupboard door was opened, it all came tumbling out. Given they had two children, this had been the only way she had been able to cope with their worlds. When we started working together, not only did she get more space but she was also able to give more love to her two boys. You see beneath this mess is genuine buried treasure. That crystal clear perception, precision of thought and profoundly helpful focus that we all enjoy.
